About this objectTwo wooden lawn bowling balls. The balls are made of lignum vitae ('wood of life', a dense hardwood) with a black varnished coating. On each ball there is a small disc of light brown casein (a by-product of milk and an early form of plastic). Lignum vitae bowls with casein were only produced between the mid 1920s and the 1930s.
