Built in 1934 by William and Norman Laymen, Cromarty Oyster Farmers, "Stella" was the most recognisable boat on Port Stephens waters. In 1939 "Stella" was commandeered for the war effort serving the troops along the river systems in New Guinea from 1941-1945. Returning to Port Stephens as deck cargo the previous owners, the Phillips family, were given the right to buy her back. In 1989, due to the collapse of the oyster industry "Stella" was sold at auction. Sadly neglected in the coming years she was dragged ashore and burnt.
