Game fishing in Port Stephens has a long history dating back to claims that the first black marlin caught on a rod and reel was landed off Port Stephens in 1910. Athel DÓmbrain, OA with Dr Watkins and Newman Silverthorne were founding members of the Newcastle and Port Stephens Game Fish Club (c.1923) based in Shoal Bay.
