About this object‘’New Era’’ was the Holberts first boat bought by Dave Holbert just before the commencement of WWII at a cost of £50.00. When purchased it was a cream boat on the Hawkesbury, 34 ft 2 inches long built of kauri timber with a beam of 10 ft. She drew 3 ft and was powered by a 12 hp Frisco Standard which produced maximum revs of 380. The engine was started by hooking a foot onto the spoke of the fly wheel to gain compression, followed by a hissing sound before the engine fired.
David (Dave) Holbert was the first in a continuing line of fish and oystermen and the first local fisherman to send leatherjackets to the Sydney Market. They were offered for sale at a penny halfpenny a pound.
