In 1959 a fierce storm forced the Italian fishing trawler, “Italia Star” to seek shelter in Port Stephens waters. Unfortunately, while entering the harbour, the 56-foot boat was swamped by a huge wave and the following wave rolled her over. The sole survivor, Carmelo Musumeci, was rescued by a police launch. His two crewmates were never found despite extensive air, sea and land searched.
The ‘’Italia Star’’ was salvaged by local fishermen Teddy McLeay and ‘Bub’ Monin and taken to George Kennedy’s slip at Little Beach where she was repaired.
