The boat had to be strengthened for fear she would shake itself to bits. ; Oceania, Australia, New South Wales, Port Stephens, Nelson Bay; Fishing VesselTMA2021.00184; Photograph, "Butter box" ; Pain Brothers; Boat Builder; "Butterbox", better known as "Norco"by the locals was built at Anna Bay by the Pain brothers, Ab, George and Jim. Unfortunately, while entering the harbour, the 56-foot boat was swamped by a huge wave and the following wave rolled her over. The sole survivor, Carmelo Musumeci, was rescued by a police launch. His two crewmates were never found despite extensive air, sea and land searched. The ‘’Italia Star’’ was salvaged by local fishermen Teddy McLeay and ‘Bub’ Monin and taken to George Kennedy’s slip at Little Beach where she was repaired. ; Fishing VesselTMA2021.00179; Photograph, "St. Patrick" ; Ryan, Bill; Boat Builder; "St Patrick" - the last boat commissioned by Ron McLean from Bill Ryan. "St Patrick" was sailed north to Queensland for prawning in the warmer waters, first to Mooloolaba and then further north to Gladstone. While carrying out repairs in Townsville, Ron sustained a serious electrical shock which damaged his spine and forced him to wear a steel brace for the remainder of his life. Finding it too difficult to work with his injuries he was finally forced to quit the sea that he loved. ; 1954; Oceania, Australia, New South Wales, Taree; Fishing VesselTMA2021.00178; Photograph, "Shamrock" ; Ryan, Bill; Boat Builder; "Shamrock" - the second trawler to be commissioned by Ron McLean from master boat builder, Bill Ryan in Taree. The “Shamrock” had a very interesting history. Built at a cost of $45,000, the 54-foot trawler was powered by a 220 hp Mercedes diesel engine. However, within twelve months of the build new regulations were introduced by the Martime Services Board (MSB) restricting the types of vessels working the open seas. The MSB informed Ron McLean that the planking on “Shamrock” was 1/8 inch under size and the ribbing was ¼ inch under as well. The only water the “Shamrock” could work was inside the port, which she was not designed to do. Caught fishing outside the heads would incur a $240.00 fine per day. Ron remained defiant and locked horns with the MSB on a number of occasions. Finally in October 1972, following extreme media pressure and intervention by MSB President, Mr. W.H. Brotherson, Ron received a Certificate of Survey enabling him to work his boat outside the heads. ; 1954; Oceania, Australia, New South Wales, Taree; Fishing VesselTMA2021.00177; Photograph, "Delstar" ; Ryan, Bill; Boat Builder; "Delstar" - commissioned by Ron McLean and built by Bill Ryan at Taree This was Ron's first fishing trawler to be commissioned by Ron from Bill Ryan. Another two were to follow, "Shamrock" and "St. Patrick". When not fishing Ron McLean never hesitated to help out, particularly where kids were concerned. She drew 3 ft and was powered by a 12 hp Frisco Standard which produced maximum revs of 380. The engine was started by hooking a foot onto the spoke of the fly wheel to gain compression, followed by a hissing sound before the engine fired. David (Dave) Holbert was the first in a continuing line of fish and oystermen and the first local fisherman to send leatherjackets to the Sydney Market. They were offered for sale at a penny halfpenny a pound. ; Fishing VesselTMA2021.00170; Photograph, "Sea Swan" ; Unknown; Boat Builder; “Sea Swan" - Built in 1950 the "Sea Swan" was referred to as a "back to front" 52-foot fishing trawler purchased for the sum of £120.00 by Ted and Keith McLeay.
